Realistic Decorating for Hosts & Homeowners

When we moved into our new home, one of the most unexpectedly overwhelming tasks was styling the beds. Suddenly, I had more bedrooms than I was used to — and that meant more bedding to buy, more styles to choose from, and more decisions to make. Sounds silly, right? I’ve been making my bed since I was a kid, but picking out coordinated bedding as an adult felt surprisingly intimidating.

But here’s what I’ve learned: if you start with the basics, the rest becomes much easier. Once you understand the essential layers, you can mix, match, and personalize to create a bed that’s cozy, functional, and beautiful.

Bedding Basics: What You Need

Before we get into styling, here are the core components that I use to create a well-made bed:

    1. Mattress Protector

    1. Sheets (Fitted + Flat)

    1. Duvet (Insert + Cover) or Comforter

    1. Quilt or Coverlet (Optional for layering)

    1. Blanket

    1. Pillows (Sleeping + Decorative)

Of course, these elements can change according to your comfort/style preferences, and as the temperature changes with the seasons. I tend to run cold, so I prefer several layers of comfy blankets for a cozy feel, but feel free to mix and match until you find what works best for you!

Step-by-Step: How to Build Your Bed

Step 1: Mattress Protector

This layer is often overlooked, but it’s essential. A good mattress protector helps shield your mattress from spills, stains, and allergens like dust mites or pet dander. It also makes cleanup a breeze — just toss it in the washer. Bonus: some options add a light layer of cushion for added comfort.

Pro tip for Airbnb owners: A quiet, waterproof protector is a must.

Step 2: Add Sheets

Next, add your fitted sheet and flat (or top) sheet. Some people skip the flat sheet and sleep directly under the duvet cover, but I personally prefer the smooth, breathable texture of a top sheet.

Materials to consider:

    • Cotton – classic, breathable, and luxurious when you choose long-staple options.

    • Sateen or bamboo – silky smooth and great for hot sleepers.

    • Flannel or jersey – soft and warm for colder seasons.

Swap fabrics by season or preference — it’s all about what makes you most comfortable.

Step 3: Duvet or Comforter

This is your bed’s cozy core. A duvet includes two parts: the insert and the cover. Duvets are usually fluffier and more customizable since you can swap out the cover easily. A comforter, on the other hand, is a single piece — often lighter, sometimes more affordable, and typically used as-is.

I like to fold the duvet or comforter down twice at the top of the bed for that fluffy, hotel-style look.

Step 4: Layer with a Quilt or Coverlet (Optional, But Chic)

This layer adds warmth and style. A lightweight quilt or coverlet can go on top of your duvet for texture and color, or underneath it for extra insulation. I love using this step to introduce subtle patterns or visual interest to an otherwise neutral bed.

Step 5: Add Sleep + Decorative Pillows

Start with your standard sleep pillows — I prefer stacking two on each side, with pillowcases or shams that coordinate with your sheets or quilt.

Then, layer in decorative pillows:

    • For a Queen bed: 2 Euro pillows (26” x 26” European square pillows)+ 1-2 smaller accent pillows (square or lumbar)

    • For a King bed: 3 Euro pillows + 2–3 smaller accent pillows

Mixing sizes and shapes creates a high-end, styled look without much effort.

Step 6: Finish with a Throw

A throw blanket is the final cozy touch. You can fold a full-size blanket neatly across the foot of the bed, or casually drape a smaller throw over a corner. This is an easy way to add texture, contrast, or a pop of color.

Try boucle, chunky knit, or faux fur for a soft, homebody-approved vibe.

Styling Tips: Pull It All Together

    • Choose a Color Palette: Stick to 2–3 complementary tones for a calming, cohesive look. (Think: creamy neutrals, soft sage, or dusty blue.)

    • Mix Textures and Patterns: Layering linen, velvet, knit, and cotton creates visual depth and coziness.

    • Match Your Mood: Prefer neat and symmetrical or casual and lived-in? There’s no wrong way — go with what feels right for you.

Final Thoughts

Don’t feel like you need to buy everything at once — building your dream bed can (and should) be a process. Start with the basics, add in layers as you go, and make it your own. Whether you’re styling your primary bedroom or prepping a guest room for visitors, creating a cozy, stylish bed is one of the best ways to make your space feel like home.
